I absolutely love this portable ice maker, but if you are considering purchasing it you'll have to keep in mind what it is and what it isn't intended to be. Many people will blame a machine for not meeting their expectations, expectations that exceed its capabilities. For example, if you expect this machine to be an ice hog and churn out enough ice for a hundred people, you might want to take a pass. I've discovered that many times if I haven't read the directions thoroughly I miss a few things. The directions for this portable ice maker are a tad spotty and could use a bit of tightening up, but I wrote out my own just in case someone needs them.
The portable ice machine came very well packaged. It was double boxed and even had stiff foam edge protectors to keep the inner box from shifting. I do appreciate well-packed items because there's nothing more frustrating than anticipating an item only to have to return it because of breakage. The candy-apple red machine was in pristine condition. Now, instead of rushing to set it up and start making ice, it's a wise idea to let it set for twenty-four hours or more to let the refrigerant settle. While this process is going on, you may wish to wash out the basket, scoop, and inside of the unit with warm, soapy water.
HOW TO RUN YOUR PORTABLE ICE MACHINE:
~ After unpacking, allow the unit to "rest" for twenty-four hours or more to allow the refrigerant to settle.
~ Wash the basket, scoop, and inside of the unit with warm, soapy water, and allow to air dry.
~ Remove the ice basket and scoop.
~ Fill the water reservoir below the basket with 1 1/2 quarts of white distilled vinegar and 1 1/2 quarts of potable water. Do not fill above the "fill line." This line blends in with the white interior, but can be seen and felt just below the basket on the inner side.
When cleaning the ratio of vinegar is 1:1, but the directions don't tell you how much. This "formula" worked well for me.
~ Make sure your machine is plugged in and then press the "Clean" button on the LED display for six seconds. You will then hear an audible hum and water dripping/moving through the machine.
You will notice that on the LED display, there is an image of rotating fan blades on the lower right-hand side. The water and vinegar solution is now moving through the machine. This process will take about five minutes. The LED display panel doesn't light up and the humming stops when the cycle is complete.
~ After completion of the cleaning cycle with the vinegar and water solution, you will need to drain it. On the left-hand side of the machine is a plug. Make sure you have a bucket beneath the machine. Unplug the machine.
Open the plug counterclockwise. There is a mini-silicone plug blocking the drain. Take this out carefully (I held onto it because it's easy to misplace or lose). The water comes out in a rather rapid stream so I simply left the cap, which is held in place with a plastic assembly, in drop down position until the draining was complete.
~ Once the water and vinegar mixture has drained, replace the mini-silicon plug and cap the drain.
~ Now it's time to "rinse" out the insides of the machine. I added potable water to the machine, once again just below where the basket is supposed to rest. Now that I knew where the fill line was, I was able to do this visually.
~ Plug the machine back in. Once again you will hold down the self-clean button for another cycle. This will flush out any remaining vinegar and residue that may have remained in the machine.
~ Unplug the machine and repeat the drain cycle.
~ The water does splash around a bit so I took a clean microfiber cloth and wiped down the inside.
~ Fill the machine with filtered water. Once again, make sure it's below the fill line. I opted to use filtered water from my Brita because I didn't want any flaky buildup from my water to end up in the machine and wanted cubes sans taste.
~ Replace the ice tray and scoop. Plug the machine back in, press "ON." Press "SELECT" to chose the size cubes you want (there is a visual for this) on the LED panel.
~ No LED lights will stay on nor will the panel light up. I was worried I did something wrong, but within a minute the machine started to hum like a fridge and I heard water moving through the machine.
~ The portable ice maker began to make ice.
You can set this on a timer, but because it's so warm out, I've opted to keep it running on a continual basis. The cubes have a hollowed out section in the middle. If you leave the unit running, after a while the ice does start to melt and will clump. For the most part I was able to break it apart with the scoop. The rest I used immediately and then the machine sensed it needed to make more ice.
Once again, I can't remind anyone enough that this machine isn't capable of producing scads of ice all at once. After fifteen minutes of anxiously awaiting my ice, only the bottom of the tray was covered. Not to worry because within an hour I had more than enough for my purposes. This is a great little personal ice maker, not an industrial one. Also keep in mind that by using filtered water, you'll avoid bad tasting ice and chemical buildup in the machine. Yes, I do love this machine and think it's perfect to use during hot summer months.

I'm not sure what to make of this product. When the package arrived, I opened it and removed the ice maker from the box it was shipped in. I immediately noticed that there was oil on the bottom of the icemaker and in the box. I inspected the packaging and there was no obvious damage to it so I do not think it was damaged in shipment. I also noticed that the cover for the control pad was peeling back from the unit.
The instructions said to let the unit sit for a while to let the refrigerant settle, and so I waited several days to try it. Following the instructions exactly, I attempted to make ice. Nothing happened. The only noise I heard was a sound like water dripping onto something hot. Nothing on the unit got cold. I touched various parts of it and there was no cold at all. The instructions said that if the air was too warm, to use colder water so I cooled a pitcher of water with ice cubes and poured it into the water compartment. Still no ice.
Even if the ice maker would have worked, there are still some problems with it that I can see. First, the unit is VERY heavy. I need someone to help me carry it and I could never lift it onto the counter by myself. Second, it is really big and takes up a lot of space. The instructions are very clear that the unit is not to be used outside or in hot weather. I was thinking that a portable ice maker would have been really great to take camping (where there is electricity) but I don't believe it would work properly, given the warnings on the manual.
The only positive I can see is the pretty red color. Perhaps if it had worked, I would have some positive things to say about it.
As I received this item from the Amazon Vine Program, I do not know how to return the product. I am attempting to contact Newair itself to see what I should do. I'll update when I hear from them.

Newair AI-215R Red Portable Ice Maker with 50 Lbs. Daily Capacity This is the best purchased we've made in a while. We've had our icemaker for a couple of weeks now and it works great. It's so easy to operate. It started making ice right away. We have enjoyed plenty of ice since. The ONLY negative I would have is, the front panel where the buttons are is to small. If it were bigger, it would be easier to read. But the push buttons do make it easy to operate. We found the instruction that came with the icemaker to be helpful and easy to understand. We would recommend this icemaker to anyone wanting that extra amount of ice that the refrigerator just can't handle. I am sorry for those who have had problems with their icemaker. We bought ours through Amazon. We have never had a problem returning things to Amazon when there was a problem. But as of now we won't be returning our Newair AI-215R. It's a keeper!
