We owned a pair of "Sidekicks" in our last house. Bought them in 2005 and they were FABULOUS! Best frig and freezer we had ever owned. We moved cross-country in 2012 and just had to buy another pair of Whirlpool's "Sidekicks"... even though the price had almost doubled in 7 years.
In the past six months we have had TWO of these new freezers fail. Have since found out from an authorized service tech that many owners of the "Sidekick" freezer have had this problem.
The problem with the freezer is that the large bottom wire basket (25% of the storage) does not fit properly - and if it is loaded with food - the basket will prevent the door from sealing completely. Without a proper door seal the thermostat can burn out or the defrost cycle is interrupted. In either case, all of your food will thaw out.
We have also been told that between 2005 and 2012 Whirlpool changed where the "Sidekicks" are built - and since that change - the repairmen have seen the quality drop dramatically.
Besides the enormous hassle and inconvenience we have experienced - Whirlpool refuses to pay the claim for the $1000 of food that we lost in both failures. BE WARNED!!

I have had the Sidekick set for under a year and the freezer has seen the repairman 8 times with visit number 9 scheduled TWO WEEKS out. Whirlpool couldn't care less how much food I have had to throw away nor that their repair service has no clue on how to fix it. I built my kitchen around these units and nothing else is the same size so I am out of luck just getting something else. Worst purchase ever.
